Chapter 10
The live nativity? They wanted her to manage the live nativity for the holiday pageant. What did she know about a live nativity? That staff meeting had been a shock; she didnât even know they had a holiday pageant. Her head was spinning while the teachers talked about what they would do for the holiday they had chosen to represent.
Apparently Mabel Erickson had managed the live nativity since the beginning of time, but had finally retired from teaching last year. It was something of a tradition for the third grade class, so she had agreed since she didnât know what she would do for any of the other holidays they would have in the pageant. It wasnât just December holidayâs either, but many other holidays like Chinese New Year and International Peace Day.
So Ellen was taking Mrs. Ericksonâs spot, as the third grade teacher and managing the live nativity. It was held outside on the school front lawn, before the holiday pageant, to keep the parents and younger siblings entertained during setup.
Ellen needed to assign the roles her third grade class would take, and then get some animals. They had a manger and building that would be set out for her. The costumes and small props would be delivered to her classroom later that morning. She would go through those and see if anything needed refurbishing. It might be good to talk to Mrs. Erickson; to get any insights she might be able to pass on.
Since Hank probably knew all about the live nativity, a cow should be easy to obtain. Were there any other animals in town? She had no idea; maybe she should make a list of questions for Mrs. Erickson.
Her class only had twelve students in it, how the school had managed to keep such small classes was a miracle, she guessed it must have something to do with the remoteness of the area, and maybe some kind of subsidy to keep from combining the classes. Her seven boys and five girls would be easy to work with. For the boys she would need a Joseph, shepherds and wise men. For the girls she would need a Mary, and all the rest could be angels.
When the children started coming into class, they spied the nativity props and got very excited. They started asking her about who got to be what role. She told them she had not decided yet and that they could each take out a piece of paper and write down what they would like to be. Each one should pick their first choice and their second. She would collect the papers and let them know this week who got what role.
During lunch Ellen went to the school office and asked for Mrs. Ericksonâs phone number. She dialed the phone and when Mrs. Erickson answered she introduced herself as the new third grade teacher.
âWell hello! I thought it would be todayâthat they had the pageant staff meetingâand you probably want to come by to ask some questions.
